U.S. Mint Unveils Final 5 State Quarter Designs
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Mint has unveiled the final five designs for the state-themed quarters that go into circulation in late January.
The first one, honoring Oklahoma, will feature the state bird, the scissortail flycatcher and the state wildflower, the Indian blanket.
The other four will follow in 10-week intervals.
New Mexico will be represented by a (Zia) sun symbol. Arizona by the Grand Canyon and a (saguaro) cactus. Alaska's has a grizzly bear wading in a stream with a salmon in its mouth. Hawaii, the final state to enter the union, is the latest to be honored with a coin. It will bear the image of a former monarch (King Kamehameha).
Based on a 2005 survey, U.S. Mint officials estimate 147 million people have gotten involved in collecting the quarters with their constantly changing designs. read more
